Missak Manouchian, stateless hero
“Happiness to those who will survive us and taste the sweetness of the Freedom and Peace of tomorrow. I am sure that the French people and all the Freedom fighters will be able to honor our memory with dignity.” This is what Missak Manouchian, founder of the resistance group FTP-MOI (Francs-tireurs and supporters of immigrant labor), wrote to Mélinée Manouchian, also a resistance fighter, on February 21, 1944, a few hours before being executed at Mont-Valérien. Eighty years later, the couple entered the Pantheon. A look back at their history and the meaning of this tribute today.
